"Monday evening last , died here after a few days' illness, John Symmes, Esq., in the 58th year of his age, Lieut. Colonel of the militia of this twon. he was a gentleman of a very courteous and affable disposition, industrious, honest in his dealings with mankind, and pious towards God."
Date of death calculated from above description. March 1st was a Thursday. 1764 predated leap years, therefore "Monday evening last" had to be Monday, February 26th.
